Were you ever really there?

A dream, a wish or just a hope?
A part of me and yet apart
A delicate frost sparking in the morning glare
Were you ever really there?

You were with us for seven short weeks
A daydream swaddled bundle of soft happiness
We shared smiles and embraces
We carried you to sleep and smelt your angel hair
Were you ever really there?

Maybe you were an autumn leaf
Caught in an upward aeolian
Floating, dancing, drifting
Gone without a care
Were you ever really there?

A part of us has left with you
A jigsaw piece of our soul
We wrapped it carefully and gave it to you
Your loss feels like more than we can bare
Were you ever really there?

How can you lose something you never had?
Never held, never saw, never spoke aloud?
Only known by a love so fierce, so deep and so profound.
Were you ever really there?
