‘I’d never heard of a missed miscarriage until it happened to me’

On June 26th 2023 I went for my 12 week scan I was actually 12 weeks and 2 days. I’d had a previous scan for 12 weeks but I was too early for the 12 week tests as I was only 10 weeks 2 days by there measurements. In the 10 week appointment everything looked fine, me and my husband could see a strong heart beat. We’d had a blood test done to determine the sex of the baby.

We was having a boy. Over the next couple of weeks every thing seemed fine. No pains, no blood, no signs whatsoever. We went into my scan with no doubts or worries but as the silence hit when I was been scanned I just knew as I couldn’t see the heart beating as I had the previous scan. I held my breath in case I was moving too much. Until the nurse said the words I’m so sorry. Me and my husband burst into tears. You never think it will happen to you. We were moved to a special room and was told he measured 10 weeks and 5 days. So only 3 days after the first scan his heart stopped just a few days after I’d seen everything was ok.

I was told I’d need a d&c. Which I had 4 days later. I was placed next to women who were willingly ending their pregnancies. This was really hard.

Unfortunately my story didn’t end there as the d&c didn’t work. I was back and forth for weeks for scans and bloods. I had tablets to help which didn’t work and ended up having to have another d&c. I feel it was so traumatic and looking back I don’t know how I got through it all but I did. After all that I got pregnant after my first period in September, which I did not expect at all. The whole pregnancy was hard worrying if I’d lose this baby. I bled at 9 weeks thinking here we go, but it was just a haematoma. She ended up being born at 31 week gestation and again I thought I was going to lose her I thought this every day she was in NICU. Luckily I write this as she’s 10 weeks old now. There was light at the end of the tunnel.

My advice for anyone is talk to someone. It does help. You are stronger than you think and although you don’t know how you will cope. You will find a way.

This is my story. My name is Sarah.
