My story…

Me and my partner first started trying to conceive in 2020. By March of 2021 I had missed my period and decided to test. Two lines appeared.

I went for an early scan at my local EPU due to an ovarian cyst. Was scanned and could see a gestational sac. I was told I’d be rescanned in two weeks time.

Fast forward the day before that scan, I started heavily bleeding. I went to A&E, was scanned and told baby measured the same as the previous scan. No growth, and cervix dilated – I was miscarrying. My first missed miscarriage. I should have been 8 weeks 4 days, but baby measured 6 weeks 1 day.

As it was my first miscarriage I thought nothing of it. I was upset, but it was time to try again.

By January 2022 I had just had an ovarian cystectomy two weeks prior, and again there were two lines on a test. I didn’t let myself get excited, I knew what was to follow.

Only a week later was I bleeding again, at 6 weeks 4 days. My local EPU confirmed miscarriage a couple weeks later, with scans and blood tests showing HCG levels going down.

Feeling deflated and depressed I thought, “Well I’ve only had two, I’m not entitled to any testing yet. Time to try again.”

I was sad and really depressed, but I still said, “Nope, I need to try again, I can’t give up yet.”

Along comes January 2023, 5/1/23 to be precise, I was staring at a really faint positive. I called my local EPU straight away and booked in a scan for 19/1/23. I rang my GP and asked them to prescribe progesterone. They did and I started it around 9/1/23 (too low dose) and patiently waited for the scan.

So the day of the scan arrived, there I was again, and it showed a fetal pole with faint cardiac activity, measuring 5 weeks 1 day. The EPU nurse prescribed progesterone, 400mg twice daily. I really believe the progesterone is what got me to the point of ever seeing a heartbeat.

Two weeks go by and I’m at my next scan, 26/1/23. There had been a weeks growth in those two weeks, the baby measured 6 weeks 1 day. They told me baby was viable as it had cardiac activity present. I was slightly excited, but I knew I couldn’t get too excited.

Another two weeks waiting to be scanned. Anxious as anything, daily.

My symptoms all disappeared on 5/2/23 and my next scan wasn’t until the 9/2/23 – I was patiently waiting, nervous, but in my head I knew it was all over.

The day of scan rolled around, I went in feeling dread. I knew something wasn’t right.

He showed me the baby, measuring 8 weeks 6 days, but I knew instantly that it was still, there was no movement no heart activity like the last two scans. Then the dreaded words – “I’m sorry, there’s no heartbeat.”

I was heartbroken. I left the hospital.

Now it’s been a few months and I’ve come to terms with what’s happened to me.

I’ve been referred to the Tommy’s miscarriage clinic in London and I’m awaiting my first appointment. All my testing so far has come back normal. Time to keep trying again.
